Love follows where Desire leads”
Is a true statement — but it needs unpacking, because desire can be holy and life-giving or corrupt and destructive, and love will take on the nature of the desire it is following.
I. The Link Between Desire and Love
In Scripture and human experience, desire is the initiator — the “spark” that sets the direction of affection.
Desire determines the object of your love (what or who you pursue).
Love becomes the commitment to keep following and serving that desire.
If desire is righteous, love becomes covenantal.
If desire is corrupt, love becomes idolatry or obsession.
Matthew 6:21 — “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
II. Two Kinds of Desire
1. Righteous Desire (Spirit-Led)
Springs from agreement with YAH’s will
Produces selfless, sacrificial, enduring love (agape)
Anchors relationships in covenant and mutual honor
Example: Desire for a spouse within YAH’s plan → Love that nurtures, protects, and grows
2. Corrupt Desire (Flesh-Led)
Driven by lust, greed, power, or validation needs
Produces possessiveness, manipulation, and conditional love
Breaks covenant when the desire changes or is no longer fed
Example: Desire for beauty or status → Love that fades when those external features change
III. Spiritual Implications
In the spirit realm, desire is an alignment signal.
It determines:
Which spirit has influence over your love
Whether that love builds the Kingdom of YAHUAH or feeds the kingdom of darkness
James 1:14–15 — “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin…”
If desire is not sanctified, love will follow it into bondage.
IV. In Relationships
When Desire Is Holy
Love follows into commitment, loyalty, and service. The feelings may fluctuate, but the covenant remains. When Desire Is Fleshly
Love follows into compromise, secrecy, and self-centeredness. The bond often collapses under pressure.
This is why marriages founded on sexual chemistry alone often fail — because when the initial desire shifts, love has nowhere to go.
V. Guarding Desire
Test Desire by the Word — Is this pursuit in agreement with YAH’s commands? (Psalm 37:4)
Submit Desire in Prayer — Ask YAH to purify the source of attraction or longing.
Discipline the Flesh — Don’t feed ungodly appetites with media, conversation, or habits that inflame them.
Anchor Love in Covenant — Commit to what is right even if desire wavers.
Final Thought:
Love is like a faithful servant — it will follow the master called Desire wherever it goes. That’s why the first battle of love is the battle over what you desire.
